The edges are truer, better defined and better concentric uniformity and straightness to tubes and bars. It has a smoother and shinier surface than hot rolled steel. The advantages given by using steel produced in the cold rolled method is that it allows for a wider range of surface finishes. Bars and tubes are hot rolls and then, once cooled, are formed into cold finished tubes and bars. Other shapes like bars or tubes are drawn and not rolled. When the term cold rolled is used it refers exclusively to sheets that undergo the afore described compression between rollers. In truth these finishing processes modify existing hot rolled stock into an end product. When the term rolled is used it often refers to reference myriad finishing processes including turning, grinding, and polishing. The steel then goes through the cold reduction mills, at which point the material is cooled (at the room temperature) and then the forming occurs followed by either press-braking or cold roll forming to produce the desired shape. Unlike hot rolled steel, cold rolled steel is heated and cooled at the room temperature and then rolled again. Hot rolled steel can have a rougher surface texture, which can be easily buffed out. These are caused by the heating (expanding) and the subsequent cooling down (shrink, warpage). The disadvantages of steel produced using the hot rolled method is that dimensional imperfections can occur. The main advantages of hot rolled us that it is easier to produce and as a consequence it is cheaper in cost than cold rolled steel plate. Hot rolled steel is produced and recommended for applications where precision is not essential and tolerances are flexible. The entire heat treatment process is carried out at very high temperatures. The piece of steel is then rolled through the mill into the desired shape. It begins as a piece of still billet which is then heat treated up to 1700 degrees Fahrenheit (926° Celsius) in a blast furnace.

It’s production is a basic mill process wherein the steel is rolled at high temperature. One of the questions that we field regularly is: what is the difference between cold rolled and hot rolled steel? This product is cold rolled steel, but it is important to understand what this means when choosing the ideal metal for your requirements. The unit of measure being a pascal (Pa)/megapascal(MPa), a newton per square metre (N/m2) or pounds-force per square inch (psi). Tensile strength is then measured as a force per unit area. Some metals break without any deforming occurring, whereas other more ductile materials will stretch a small amount. The analyst then test the type of steel by increasing the force on the material until it fractures and fragments.

This is measured using a tensile strength test, which involves taking a sample of the material and placing it in a tensometer. When we speak about tensile strength we are referring to what is simply the maximum amount of stress a specific material can withstand without breaking when being stretched and pulled. If you do require a higher tensile strength then we suggest that you search for high carbon steel. It’s tensile strength is therefore low (400MPa) due to this lower carbon content. Mild steel is a fairly ductile material as it contains a smaller amount of the hardening alloy (carbon) than similar carbon steels. Please handle with care when handling this product as there may be sharp edges from the cutting process. We do our best to always ensure that our products are kept in the best possible condition. Please note that there may be some scratches on the metal as these plates are housed in our factory. Magnets will stick to this sheet but it is not itself a magnet. Mild steel can be welded and it is also suitable for painting. If your sheet plate does show signs off rust then simply remove with WD40 or fine sanding. The grade of plain sheet steel that we have available has mechanical properties that provide excellent machinability, formability and weldability. Please use galvanised sheet or stainless steel sheet if you require a greater corrosion resistance. Mild steel is also known as plain steel so it is not rust proof and may rust over time, or if left in damp conditions. Sheet metal is also available in aluminium and stainless steel. We can cut this to specific sizes for you if required as it is very difficult to cut. It is popular with our customers because it is so strong and can be used for many DIY applications. This specific option is a thin sheet metal. The uses for mild steel plate metal include automotive bodywork, boxes and security doors.
